Tufted Rugs Are Not Hand Knotted

Hand Tufted Rugs are not Hand Knotted Rugs

Hand tufted rugs are not hand knotted and don’t fall in the same category nor price range.  Although, both are made with hands, only one being the hand knotted is actually physically tied by hand (Hand Knotted).  The hand tufted rug is made by hands but with the assistance of a device that shoots the knots in for them and can move at a much faster pace.

How do you tell the difference, sometimes it is not easy for the untrained eye to recognize the differences especially, on high end tufted rugs that can recreate the pattern on the backside of the rug.  But, most hand tufted rugs have a latex back to them or perhaps  it is covered with a cloth backing to hide the latex.  Hand knotted rugs will not have a backing and the pattern on the front will show through to the back.  Now word to the wise, in the rug world never and always are not good terms to follow because each maker can do things to go against this pattern.  Sometimes a hand knotted could have a back to protect it from the floor so always and never we won’t use.

Hand Knotted rugs have a higher value because of their original hand work however; some tufted rugs can be very expensive because they have silk in them and a high end wool.  Don’t base your purchase on the way the rug is made instead; make your purchase based on what you like and the décor of your room.

I will say that most hand knotted rugs will last way past the length of a hand tufted rug because, the latex in hand tufted rugs can break down over years of use.
